Long ago, the Dark Lord Dredmor was bound in the darkest dungeons beneath the earth by great and mighty heroes. Very very basic roguelike, good for when you just want to burn 20 minutes.Īnyways, my roguelike list is like this-ToME for day to day, SoTS:TP, Cogmind or Xenomarine for when I need a break from ToME and Golden Krone Hotel/this game for when I want to play a roguelike but not commit to it fully or am strapped for time.Battle Diggles, Find Loot, Sacrifice Lutefisk to the Lutefisk God! Has adorable pixel graphics, nice music, sleek lore/descriptions, it's super easy to get into, has a great progression system (though will eventually run dry after you unlock all the classes) and interesting mechanics. Honorable mentions would be Golden Krone Hotel. ToME is where it's at but there are some nice alternatives like this and others worth playing. I still have numerous races/classes/ect to unlock too :D Wanting to unlock recipes just doesn't do much for me-especially since I can cheat and use the wiki haha. lol I always have a reason to play ToME it seems and I appreciate that after dumping a 1000 hours into it. I like ToME's approach where you have numerous unlocks, from classes, races, skills, characters, cosmetics and more. My only gripe is the progression is mainly tied to beating it and unlocking recipes. I wouldn't say it's as complex as ADOM or as deep as ToME, but there is a surprising amount of strategies/builds you can come up with and tons of loot to find and craft to make each run unique and special. Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a pretty nice classical roguelike that looks very good and plays even better. A big part of it is the curve to learn is eased by the numerous game modes (explorer for instance has unlimited lives) allowing you to learn the game without overly frustrating yourself and it can be 100% played with your mouse, no commands are needed to play. (no offense to devs or anything here!)ĭon't let the retro graphics scare you off, it's super polished, deep and easy to get into for newcomers unlike ADOM. Best classical roguelike: Tales of Maj Eyal. ![]()
